Season 2010 -2011

The new season has finally arrived! The promise of what may be for the forthcoming season finally becomes reality from 1st September 2010. The start of the season seems to be a little wild with the current winds and rain drving across the washes! I am sure the next 6 months will offer much better and, of course, much worse days for us to enjoy??!!,
At the start of the season is always a good time to remind ourselves of some of our rules and customs.

Firstly, please respect your surroundings! The club is 50 years old and as such has spent all of this time fostering good relations with our landowners, pick up your spent cartridges and any others you may find, I have picked out a few of our rules below but the full set can be found in the members section. Please familiarise yourselves again!

Above all have a great and safe season!

Whittlesey Wildfowers and Conservationists are a group of like minded people with a commitment to the sport of shooting and in particular, wildfowling. In addition it is an association with the countryside and that drives their need to conserve all that that entails.

Wildfowling has long been part of the heart of Fenland people and has always provided  a grateful addition to the larder. For as long as there has been water, suitable washland and wildfowl there will be people like us!

It is our intention to not only take the opportunity to enjoy this lifestyle but to also conserve it, together with the environment, the birds and any associated activities that we can preserve for the future.

Our members have many different reasons to love the sport. Some of our more mature members can remember the times when a hard fought for Mallard meant a hot meal that day. Some of our members, including the author, think of wildfowling as a way of keeping the old skills alive and I am sure some of our younger members see wildfowling as a way of truely experiencing life rather than than seeing it through a computer screen.

Whittlesey Wildfowlers offers you the opportunity to decide, whether it be fresh duck, an outdoor adventure in the coutryside or something more personal to you. The choice is yours!

The fenland countryside we love is a place that fills our hearts and soul. It is very diificult to describe that feeling of the being at one with the countryside when, just before dawn, you are laying face down on the cold, frost covered bank of a frozen dyke. In the near distance you can hear a shrill whistle of Wigeon, getting ready to rise off the flooded washes to go off to their chosen feeding places. . There is no rush here, there is time to wait, time for the dawn to arrive quietly just as it has done for every fenman from the beginnings of time.  Your heart starts to beat a little quicker as the birds approach, not so cold now!   This is your time!
