Megan - the author's dog

A story to give a flavour of what WW&C is like. I started shooting with the WW&C about two years ago and although an experienced gun had very little knowledge of wildfowling. I had recently lost my dog to serious illness and although having a successful start to wildfowling, I was having to leave birds flying over water. During one of WW&C visits to the local Thorney Farm Show I explained my dilemma to Gary Pacey, a stalwart of the Association.  He, very kindly indeed, gave me Megan who immediately became a great companion to both my son James and myself. A cracking bitch who loves nothing more than a day on the washes and thinks nothing of retrieving Canada Geese from the main River Nene. My very great thanks to Gary.

Here are some of Jim's photos showing the wash in full winter flood

Hard times! - James Swanborough on a frozen Wash
There are certain times during the season when weather conditions are so bad that our first thoughts need to be with the welfare of the wildfowl on the washes. There is a set down requirement for whether shooting needs to be suspended and if so for how long. The picture shown here of James Swanborough on the Skating Field during a particularly cold spell in January 2010 which was not part of a shooting suspension. However, in respect of his quarry, James changed from Franchi shotgun to Fuji camera for the day! For full information on the rules for bad weather please find a download at the bottom of the RULES page.
