Whittlesey Wildfowlers and Conservationists is a Membership Association based in the Fenland Town of Whittlesey in Cambridgeshire.
Whittlesey Wildfowlers and Conservationists have a strong commitment to protect the practice of Wildfowling on the Washes. Equally, as a Conservation association with the countryside at it's heart, we are dedicated to protecting and maintaining this habitat for all Wildlife species.
Whittlesey Wildfowlers and Conservationists enjoy a good working relationship with Natural England, RSPB and the Environment Agency.
Wildfowling has long been a part of the history and heart of Fenland and has always provided a grateful addition to the larder. Wildfowling is difficult and challenging but very rewarding. As long as there has been water, suitable washland and wildfowl there will be people with a passion to carry on this long tradition of providing sustainable natural food!
It is our intention to not only take the opportunity to enjoy this lifestyle but to also conserve it, together with the environment, the birds and any associated activities that we can preserve for the future.
Our members have many different reasons to love Wildfowling. Some of our more mature members can remember the times when a hard fought for Mallard meant a hot meal that day. Some of our members think of Wildfowling as a way of keeping the old skills alive and I am sure some of our younger members see Wildfowling as a way of truly experiencing life rather than than seeing it through a computer screen.
Whittlesey Wildfowlers offers you the opportunity to decide, whether it be fresh duck, an outdoor adventure in the coutryside or something more personal to you. The choice is yours!
The fenland countryside we love is a place that fills our hearts and soul. It is very difficult to describe that feeling of the being at one with the countryside when, just before dawn, you are laying face down on the cold frost covered bank of a frozen dyke. In the near distance you can hear a shrill whistle of Wigeon, getting ready to rise off the flooded washes to go off to their chosen feeding places. There is no rush here, there is time to wait, time for the dawn to arrive quietly just as it has done for every Fenman from the beginnings of time.
